The fields are covered in snow, and we continue to feel the single digit days, but the farm is buzzing as we continue with winter production and start to plan for spring!
This past fall, we prepared the high tunnel for winter production by covering the ground for three months to kill the weeds, then tilled the soil, fertilized with organic fish fertilizer, installed drip irrigation, and planted lettuce, kale, spinach, chard, and kohlrabi. Even in the winter storms and consecutive nights of below zero temperatures, we are able to put fresh, local greens on the table for our guests here at Procter.
The high tunnel will continue to be utilized all year long for season extension, even allowing us to have tomatoes earlier than usual.
